Born and raised in a big city, I never knew what a real ditch was until I moved to the prairies. Here most of the roads are not paved, and along them, fringed with reeds and wildflowers and willows, run long ditches more than 10 feet wide and five feet deep. They run on for miles and from spring 'til fall are filled with water: I once imagined I could canoe on them to all the way to town. "Surface and Depth" presents their overlooked beauty.
